Choosing the Right Method: Applying Perfume on Skin or Clothes

For a long time, the question has been if you should apply perfume on your skin or clothes. If you’re reading this, you want to know how to apply your perfume correctly. In this article, I get right to it and explain why and how to get the best of both applications.

What Happens If You Spray Perfume Directly On Your Skin?

People usually apply perfumes on the skin because their notes project better with your body’s heat. However, applying perfumes directly to your skin will only last briefly.

If you have sensitive skin, apply vaseline on your pulse points — your wrists, behind your ears, the nape of your neck, your inner elbow, at the back of your knees, between your chest, wrists, temples, at the base of your throat — before spraying on the perfume.

Using vaseline on your skin before applying perfumes helps protects your skin from perfumes with high concentrations like Parfum (which typically contains 20 to 40% fragrance oil concentration and lasts up to 24 hours) and Eau de parfum (typically has about 15 to 35% fragrance oil concentration which lasts up to 6 – 8 hours).

Here’s a tip: Using petroleum jelly on your skin will strengthen your fragrance notes and last longer.

What Happens When You Spray Perfumes Only On Clothes?

When you spray perfumes on your clothes, the smells get absorbed into the fibers of your clothes, which keep the fragrance a lot longer (because it evaporates a lot slower), compared to spraying on your skin.

Spraying your perfumes on your clothes is best for perfume concentrations like the Eau de toilette (typically containing 5 to 15% of fragrance oil concentration and lasts 2-4 hours) Eau de Cologne (includes 2-4% of fragrance concentration and typically lasts for 2 hours.)

Note: Some perfumes have high concentrations, and spraying them directly on your clothes might leave stains. Before you use it, try it on a hidden part of your clothes.

Here is how to enjoy both worlds.

No rule says you should spray perfumes. You get the best of both worlds when spraying on skin and clothes!

The smell of perfume on your skin will be unique because of your body chemistry. The original scent lasts long if you spray it directly on your clothes.

Should You Spray Perfume On Wet Skin?

No, applying perfume on your wet skin immediately after a shower will be wiped off when you dry yourself. Applying vaseline to your pulse points after drying off properly is a better option.

Does Spraying Perfume On Skin Cause Cancer?

Short answer – no. Although there are some carcinogenic substances in perfume. (Carcinogenic materials are materials that are linked to causing cancer). But the doses present are too minute to cause any health concerns—not even headaches or rashes.

What Is The Best Way To Apply Perfume?

There is no rule of thumb for fragrance application routines. Jeremy says his favorite application method is behind his ears, at the nape of his neck, and at the collar of shirts.

His routine proposes less is better. He says it is ideal that your perfume creates an aura around you and anyone that comes close to you instead of giving an overwhelming smell.

I’d apply perfume at the nape of my neck, on my wrists, behind my ears, two spurts in front, on each side of my shirt, and one at the back.

It would make me smell great all day long.
